How Pet Owners Can Boost Indoor Air Quality in 5 Free, Easy Ways

For some of us, pets are like kids in fur coats. They like to lounge with us in the living room, they prowl the kitchen in search of food, and they love to snuggle in our beds. BUT, as much as we love and spoil them – the truth is that they compromise a healthy indoor environment. Pet dander and odours are dominant air pollutants, and most pets track in dust and unwanted micro-organisms from the outside. They are also considered to be the primary taxis for dust mites and fleas into our homes.

So, how do we continue to love and spoil our pets without compromising on our own health and indoor environment?

Here is a list of “real-life” ways to have a healthy home while enjoying your pet’s company:

1. Keep their kennels, beds, toys, and blankets clean by washing them often with non-toxic, natural soaps. This can drastically reduce pet dander and odours, as well as eliminate the risk of creepy crawlies!

2. Brush and groom your pets regularly - and take advantage of the good weather to do this outdoors; this will avoid the mess and guarantee that the majority of dead skin flakes do not end up in your home.

3. Use a blanket or throw on the couch or bed where your fur-iend likes to cuddle – blankets are easy to toss into the washer, and will greatly limit the fur, dander, dust and odour that could attach itself to furniture.

4. Stay away from aerosol products or scented candles that claim to be “great air fresheners” – you’re not eliminating the source of the odors, you’re only masking them with artifical aromas that are actually chemicals. And like people, pets can be very allergic to those chemicals. Instead, combine these suggestions with use of house plants to recycle your air.

5. Fresh air is one of the top natural cleaners around - open windows and ventilate your home as often as possible.
