The Dangers of “Illuminating” Candle Pollution

The Dangers of “Illuminating” Candle Pollution

Posted on 02. Oct, 2009 by in Indoor Air Quality, Purified Living

We love candles for the ambiance, light, warmth and fragrance they create. However, the majority of candles purchased today are made from paraffin wax, which can have serious effects on our health.

Paraffin is a petroleum by-product; it fills the air with many of the same toxins found in burning diesel fuel, and soot that leaves residue on the walls, ceilings, and fabrics. Furthermore, these candles emit pollutants like benzene, styrene, toluene, acetone and particulate matter that – when airborne – can potentially penetrate the lungs, the lower respiratory track, and alveoli. In fact, the problem is so severe that North America’s largest indoor air quality conference recently presented research on the effects of black soot from paraffin candles.

There are safe, healthy, environmentally friendly alternatives. Consider natural, clean and slower burning candles like 100% soybean or beeswax candles.

There are many wonderful wax alternatives out there, including Palm Oil, which you've missed in your list. I've recently discovered the wonderfully clean scent of Mia Bella Gourmet candles. You're right, they burn cleaner, slower, and the scent is wonderful. Thank you for including this article, it's something more candle burners should be aware of.
